As some of you may remember my Albizia julibrissin Silk Tree budded up a couple of weeks ago and with a little care I have managed to get my potted specimen to flower. I am really pleased that it has and there are loads more buds waiting to open in tomorrows sunshine. I will take some more photos when it is more flooded with flowers, but there is something special about the first one (which appeared tonight) which I thought I would share.

How old is it? I bought a packet of seeds three years ago and have two growing in the garden and one outside in a pot.

    They are very slow growing.

I bought it as a 4 foot specimen about 2-3 years ago. I thik they may be initially slow growing but this year it has put on about a foot of spread and flowered so I can't complain. I will put up some better pictures later [IMG]

BM Yes, once they get 'hold' they will fly ...and take over !!! they have been flowering here for several weeks now -they are good for shading and together with their heady perfume, of an evening, can be intoxicating !! lovely, lovely plant !!

Thanks M-L I have just taken a couple more pics and a gratuitous banana shot for good measure! May be a flower from this banana in the next month!

Nice pics BM, mine had buds weeks ago (they were in pots inside) and put them outside, one flower opened and then the rest dropped off and chlorosis has set in and they are now an unhealthy yellow. As you said earlier they don't last in pots and these are 9 years old and haven't flowered for 7. :( I'm going to have to pass them on to one of our parks.

I am a bit pleased. I really didn't expect flowers on it but it has done really well this year. Going to find a permenant planting space for it next year.

The shorter of the two deck Tree Ferns has significant girth. It is just over four feet in trunk but it is in a large pot to give me an extra 2 feet of height. Next to it is a 6 foot 6" Tree Fern which is elevated again by a 2 foot high pot. I think I read somewhere, although it might have been internet rubbish! that the TF's are sectioned into commercial lengths from much larger specimens. If so I would have thought the thicker/shorter of my two is from a much older TF?

Not a bad size garden, only 3.5 times the length of mine!!!! Loads of trees to choose from Fancy, I have gone for deep rooted ones becasue of their proximity to the house so I would think this would be a sensible approach when planting near ponds. Would be a good idea to go with a tree with larger leaves as smaller leaves and ponds can be a cleaning nightmare.
