    Hi,

I planted alliums last autumn and they came up a treat this June. Am I right in thinking that alliums multiply each year? I have them in containers with salvias and I am worried that there won't be enough room for everything to thrive next year - is this likely to be a problem? It wasn't this year!

    Phil.

Containers hum. Depends on the size of your container, how many bulbs you put in each container. So hard to answer. And yes they multiply each year. In a normal planting in the ground, I usually would split them every 5 years.

It also rather depends on which species of Allium you have.................

They are purple sensation - they were absolutely fine this year and bloomed really well, as did the salvias. Are alliums easy to divide if they come back too prolifically next year?!

      Yes.
Were the Salvia an annual species?

I love alliums, different heights and types, I just love the feel of them for some reason, my favourite last year was , a huge headed type looked like a sort of globe mesh frame, think it was firecracker or rocket something firework related,

Of course Alliums are easy to divide. :thud:

Anyway, I also love all types of them. But the smaller ones can remind you of wild onions (which need pulling) So for me the smaller ones have to have some type of defined circle area, or spot that I can know that is them in the late spring when they appear just before blooming. I do love the layering effect you can get with the Alliums among the other plants.
