    Hi,

Just before the recent cold snap we moved our pots of Alstroemeria ( Indian Summer, Summer Breeze etc) to a sheltered spot by the house wall.

After that cold weather last week, down to -2c , they are looking a bit sad.

What is the best way to care for them ?

Should we Pull , Cut Back or just leave the stems as they are and let them die down naturally ?

Would it be better to keep the pots in a frost free greenhouse ?

Hello Ricky, I'd pull out any dead stems and any that come away easily. Let the pots dry out as much as possible and tuck them in the greenhouse. Keep clearing away the foliage as it dies off, to prevent mould. This is another plant that is far more likely to be killed off by excess moisture than cold per se.

We have Alstromeria in the ground and in pots. They are quite hardy but the pots can be put under cover or sheltered in the winter if they are new. We just cut off the dead flowers and cut back in early Spring. Be careful about transplanting or pulling the stems as the roots tend to be brittle.

The ones in pots we put in the cold greenhouse if there's room as they prefer to be drier in the winter. Otherwise we move them under the covered pergola and water infrequently.

This is what the RHS say How to grow alstroemerias / RHS Gardening
