Has anyone divided or propogated an Alstromeria.

Mine is an Orange colour, which grows to 2'+ in height. It is one of my favourite plants.
In the past 2 years it has spread to about 2 ft. across. I would like to keep it under control and would really like to get more of the same elswhere in the garden.
    Any help would be appreciated.

My recollection is that they hate being disturbed, but best to wait for an opinion from someone with a better memory than mine!

I had Alstroemeria growing in my greenhouse (at my former house) and once it got itself established I couldn't get rid of it!!! I wanted to plant something else instead but the Alstroemeria just kept coming back. I think you will find that any small pieces of the root will take very easily, also the seeds can be collected and sown.

My only experience is of A.psittacina, but this is easily moved and will flower in the first year.
However, it will only flower in the first year if you observe the following; move when dormant or just starting back into growth, and plant the cluster of tubers at least as deep as they were before lifting.
Do not be tempted to try to split each of these clusters into individual tubers - you'll lose the plant.
As I say, this is my experience of A.psittacina............

This is mine at the moment, about half height:-

I'll have to wait until late Autumn, when it's dying back then.
What I don't want to do is lose it. I hope the frosts this winter are not too severe, or long, to geve it the chance to recover from the stress.
Might it be a better idea to take chunks from the edges, rather than just half it?

Well I decided to hedge my bets.
There was a chunk pushing out to the front that was getting involved with another plant so I took a spade to it.
Cut straight down about 10" and took it away from the parent.
I've potted it up into a 10" pot to see how it develops. It has plenty of root and about 9" of topgrowth.
      Fingers crossed.

        It's been a week now.
I don't think it's noticed the move to the pot.
It's even starting to form a flower bud.:dbgrtmb:
