Sweeteners - am I the only person that finds the taste/aftertaste completely unbearable?

I am wanting to lose a bit of weight, so decided to try various non-sugar alternatives to try and lose some of the 'hollow' calories. I tired the stevia tablets in a cup of tea today, and although not as bad as most other sweeteners, there was still a bit of an after taste to it - whether I can learn to live with it or not remains to be seen.

Anyway, just poured a bacardi and coke - except this was Sainsbury's version of diet coke; absolutely boggin! No way in hell could I carry on with it.

And therein lies my downfall - I actually don't eat a hell of a lot, however I do partake of teas, coffees and at weekends a B&C or four, but I just can't stand the horrid taste of these sweeteners.

I used to be a "three teaspoons of sugar in my coffee and tea" person. Then back in the 90's I caught a really bad Summer cold for a couple of weeks and halfway through the cold had a cup of tea with sugar in it and had to spit it out because I couldn't stand the taste of it. So now I have no sugar in anything as it tastes awful. I did try sweeteners but the taste of those was even worse than the taste of sugar. My other hate in a drink of tea or coffee is that "Marvel" milk powder........that is like adding sawdust to your drink:gaah::hate-shocked::heehee:

You do get used to it if you can bear to persevere. I was the same as you, hated the aftertaste, but found tesco's own band was bearable after a while, and Sweetex is ok. Did take a few weeks mind you. Can only drink Diet Coke though, don't like own brands for cola.

Not keen on sweetners either. I don't often take sugar free/diet stuff and don't take sugar in tea or coffee as 1 of those annoying people that eat loads and stay slim however can taste sweetners a mile of, revolting! Have you tried either Pepsi Max or Coke Zero? I find both really not bad and good for the wasteline. Afraid booze is full of calories my Mum was a wee bit chubby, didn't eat much but had a few Whiskies and Ginger Ale daily. She died at 86 so didn't do her much harm!

I cannot stand Diet Coke, but for that reason haven't tried Coke Zero or Pepsi Max - I'll give them a shot next week.

I don't drink at all during the week, and if I am working a weekend, I won't drink then either, so it can be weeks in between - - when I do have a couple though, I like to enjoy them.

Why not I say! Maybe try Pepsi Max 1st and see what you think. I don't like Diet Coke either but IMO Pepsi Max is the best of the diet coca colas . Perhaps just buy a can so that you won't be calling me all names under the sun if you buy a big bottle and hate it!!

Sorry FC but this bit made me laugh:)

So to reduce your sugar intake, you took some fermented juice of sugar cane, and added diet coke:)

Aye, it was doomed to failure before it began - the theory was less sugar, but I agree a bit of a pointless exercise

Don't drink anything with artificial sweetners in, the body can't process or eliminate them easily.

I got caught out with Rum & diet pepsi, had to throw that out too.

Sent pepsi an email telling them exactly what I thought of their muck and thanks for ruining my evening.

There is also one study, I don't know how comprehensive it is, that shows that some artificial sweeteners get locked away in fat cells, which is where most toxins end up, and more fat molecules bind with it and then are a nightmare to shift because none of the chemicals naturally produced in the body can effectively break down the resulting compounds.

In other words, according to this study, some artificially sweeteners actually make it harder for you to lose weight.

I would be more worried about the unnamed chemicals in 'colas' than the sweeteners, they can do the real harm.
