Well it is best planted in the Autumn I think but if you get the bulbs in now you should still get some, just that the bulbs will be smaller that's all.. :thumb:

Some garlic varities are OK for spring planting such as Lautrec & Solent Wight. You might find them in bigger Garden Centres that stock the Isle of Wight Garlic Farm products.

Garlic planted now will do much less well than if planted in the autumn but will give you something.
At this late date I wouldn't spend money on the project but if you're determined to try garlic from the supermarket will give you some kind of return. Good luck.

I do wonder what is going on with garlic over winter. I planted mine in late October and there is no sign of it above ground as of yet. I suppose it's developing it's root system and about to push through the surface. It does make me wonder if Spring planted garlic won't be that far behind.

I planted mine in the Autumn( mid September) and not withstanding an atrocious winter still minus one (1) degree C in the mornings and snow and all that I have a lot of shoots coming through now buried under the snow - maybe late october was a touch late ? anyway I would wait another week or so and if no sign then maybe pull one out and see what is going on !!! From all I read autumn is by far the best time as the garlic bulbs like to have a good chunk of cold weather to make them do what they are supposed to do !!!
    Cheers

I'm a bit gutted about that then, as I bought some Sultop because the info said they could be planted in March at the latest. It's my plan for Saturday to get started on things. I hope I get something. :(

Well Liz W, I had read that too, hence my question, but I have planted mine yesterday in a trough in the unheated greenhouse. I will be able to move it outside as and when they seem to get established. Go for it like I have and we can compare notes :thmb:

Hi Blueroses, garlic needs a winter to split into cloves otherwise you just get one bulb- which is the reason for saying March is the latest it can be planted.
I would take the garlic out of the greenhouse and hope we get some frost.

    > Hi,

According to GW just now on the telly, this weekend is the last chance to plant with any success.

    Give it a try!

    Cheers!
