This is the place where I usually take the dog for a walk.
Its been like this for all of my life, but back in the 17 &1800s it was an estate. Its a council owned park now, but the main house has been sold off for development into expensive retirement appartments.
The old walled garden is having very expensive, (to me anyway) bungalows built in it, and the whole place is becoming unrecognisable.
We now have CCTV watching us and we are considered a nuisance parking where we have for years.

This is how it used to look, but things are changing. [IMG] [IMG]

Apparently this is restoration, converting it back to how it looked years ago, but why, they have built on the walled garden, so thats not RESTORED, they have cut down lots of trees(and this is only the beginning), to create a new road for the new residents.
Why try to mask a development by calling it restoration, I just wish they would be honest, that would at least help.

It is sickening to see Pete, but I guess they think the word 'Restoration' will lessen the objections.
I have seen three lots of 'vandalism' like this around the Weymouth area, fields and woods destroyed for luxury apartments. I sympathise as it seems honesty is not their best policy.

Woo, the high speed rail link is the worst thing that happened to Kent, in recent times.
If they ever push it north of London I think they will get more opposition.

It seems to me that councils are rapidly losing their integrity when it comes to planning of late. Very sorry to see this Pete, its an all too common occurance, you are not alone.

Beautiful place to walk, pete, and so sorry you're having the problems you are. [IMG]

I abhore taking such beauty and making it into developments of whatever kind. Another one of the reasons I am here.

Sorry to see this happening Pete , as Bananaman said , "It`s an all too common occurance".

Both national and local government should adopt the same motto , OUT WITH PLEASURE-IN WITH PROFIT.

In my opinion Britain is a nation obsessed with wealth and status. With the current housing "crisis" it is just a matter of time before local government start to downgrade greenbelt areas and open them up for development, all done with our best interests in mind.

Pete et al, you are so right. there's too much of this going on.

Where i had my first house it was a new estate(sorry - was probably fields before) but was told that 'over the road' was greenbelt. within 5 years it had an estate built on it.

when i moved to my current home, it was sort of surrounded by fields, just small ones & it is an estate as such but an old one. now more than half the fields have gone with houses etc being built. i read recently that permission has been given for even more flats around here.

without even going into the logistics of the increase in population, it is just a shame that this is always happening.

You're right - why doesn't the government supply housing? why does it have to be private housing? Could it be cos they sell off these green belts at a good price?

I enquired a couple of years ago about getting a council property and was told the waiting time would be 'about 8 years' 8 years, get real. of course if i went privately, got a mortgage whatever i could have it tomorrow!

anyway, thankfully i'm not in a position to need 'local authority' accomodation.

it's a blooming disgrace (could put it more strongly) that this happens with woods etc. one day people will realise that this is not a good thing, but i think it will be too late.

flipping heck, i've just ranted too :D

    cheers

Thanks its nice to know I'm not alone.
As for the HOUSING CRISIS, I think its goverment made, they know about the "feel good factor", people like to know their house prices are rising like crazy.
But in the end its no real help, it just shuts out the first time buyers.
A substansial rise in interest rates now would probably be disasterous for many people, but it should never have been allowed to get to this stage in the first place
Its the prices that are causing the housing crisis, not so much the supply.
I think we do need to go back to the days of councils building good basic accomadation for those who cannot afford to buy.

Well its seems I have got this particular developer wrong.
They are not out to kill off all wildlife or habitats that they can.
Look what I found amongst the devastation this morning, a large cedar had been spared, it had a silver tag nailed to its bark, so I suppose its got a preservation order or some such.

But its also got some boxes nailed to it, not sure what they are, maybe someone can tell me, I think they maybe for bats.

But I only found three, and they were on the side of the tree that most of the public see, there were none around the other side.
Synical old me thinks its just a publicity stunt.

they have cut down most of the hollow trees and dead wood, also most timber under 2ft in diameter, Cherry, oak, yew, box etc.

    a thriving cherry.

    Young yews.

I should add that English Heritage is involved so the place is in safe hands.

Thanks pip, I had a notion, that that was what they were.
It seems strange to me,... destroy all the natural roosting places and then provide artificial ones.
Trouble is I'm not intellegent enough to understand.
