I have 5 amaryllis bulbs from last year and only one looks like it will flower again, the others all have leaves but that’s all. Is it worth keeping the others another year or should I just discard them and try again next year? Thanks

Depends on how you grew them on after flowering last year, assuming you did?

Agree with Pete what did you do with them last year

they need the summer outside in a sunny spot and fed tomato food weekly . Then October all the foliage cut off and placed in a cool area for at least 4 weeks some wash the soil off and put in paper bags and keep in the fridge for minamum 4 weeks then come late November December you can repot and start the cycle again.

I have to admit I didn’t follow the proper procedure! I know now what to do but just wondered whether it’s worth keeping them? Next time I shall follow above instructions

I just grow them as summer flowering plants, which basically means just feed through the summer and dry off during winter, start watering again in spring as temperatures rise.

I’m also getting impatient with my amaryllis bulbs! However one point to note. If you store them in the fridge, please make sure you don’t have any apples in there at the same time. The ethylene gas given off by the apples can cause the amaryllis to stop producing flower buds. Sounds a load of codswallop, but apparently scientifically proven.

I grow them as houseplants on the windowsill (no radiator underneath). Feeding and watering in summer, then in autumn I reduce watering. Leaves start to yellow, they go dormant. During the winter I give just a bit of water along pot side. They stay in the same place, not worried about pots without green :). This year they woke already, I can see buds appearing.

If you missed dormacy period, let them grow till autumn for flowering the next season. Occasionally they can produce flowers out of the season too.

Thanks will definitely keep them as they were the extra extra large ones which were quite expensive though I did buy them after xmas last year in the garden centre sale!
