I know that tropical storms after travelling up the USA East coast make there way over the Atlantic and hit the UK . Can the same be said about these snow storms , which are a completely different weather system ? GC Weather Gurus needed !

Saw this as well on the news this morning and it looks real bad and this is someone who likes the snow:biggrin:

According to the weatherman this morning this storm isn't going to affect us but now reading Harry's post we might get the tail end:sad:

Had a message from my sister last evening and her daughter who is a flight attendant with BA contacted her from Chicargo where she was staying overnight and said it was -11 Which for her being a sun worshipper was very cold:snork:

I am busy at the moment trying to get all my clay pots full of bulbs into the greenhouse as I don't want them cracking if we do get heavy frosts and snow and I am amazed how many of the pots have daffodil shoots pushing through the soil:yes:

This one is driven by the jet stream so yes, it'll probably come our way, but, the reason they're getting so much snow is because the cold air has passed over the warm Great Lakes, ideal conditions to form snow.

Buffalo has got it bad as it's on the eastern end of the lakes. Towns on the Western side have got away with no snow.

Report from a member on the usa forum yesterday was that it was minus 4 in Texas, but no frost as the air is dry.

It'll hit warm air coming up from the tropics as it crosses the Atlantic so we shouldn't get the snow :phew:

If you have a look at today's Daily Wail there are some good photos of the snow over there especially as some people have used the snow that has banked up behind their front doors as a fridge complete with shelves to store their beer:snork:

Just spoke with our USA Michigan office today. They have about 4" of snow in the Detroit area . Buffalo NY on the other side of the lakes , has 5 feet ! Due to the lake effect.......question coming...
GC Weather Gurus ,why does the UK not have a "lake effect" with westerly cold winds from the Atlantic coming over the Irish Sea ? In fact I live about 12 miles from the coast and generally we get very mild winters not very much snow. 20 miles East , over the other side of Manchester they can get awful weather near the Pennine hills.

@Harry,I wonder if the Gulf Stream is anything to do with it as a lot of the places on the East side of this country tend to be milder nearer the coast than those a few miles further inland.

We have been down to Somerset at Xmas and we have taken photos of Daffodils in full bloom and then have driven to Porlock Weir a few miles and have seen pelargoniums very tall and still in flower in people's gardens despite these harsh conditions blowing in from across the pond:smile:
