On my way out of Battle towards Hastings, I often see an elderly lady and her dog out on one of their walks. Their pace is slow and somewhat measured but both are comfortable with this. What touches my heart is that one of her dog's front legs is completely useless. It dangles and can take no weight at all. You can see that this condition has been endured for a long time - maybe always and it is now quite difficult for her dog to walk. Every so often, the lab sinks to the ground and has a rest. She quietly waits by its side and they gaze at each other with such a deep bonding patience that it moves me almost to tears. They both know each other's limitations and accept it with such dignity. Come rain or shine, I'm sure this ritual is faithfully carried out as many times a day as the both can manage.
It would be so wonderful if they could both meet their maker at the same time as I don't think either would want to live without the other now,
    Jenny
