    Yes!!

"The Vegetable and Herb Expert" by Dr D.G. Hessayon.

Should definitely be the first (and for many people probably the only!) book a newbie to vegetable gardening buys.

P.S. I also use "Grow your own Vegetables" by Joy Larkham, is you want something more detailed, and that includes other topics such as making a compost heap.

Hi noidea. If you only get one book, make sure it's "The Vegetable and Herb Expert" by Dr D.G. Hessayon. :)

I second Kristen & freddy's recommendation: "The Vegetable and Herb Expert" by Dr D.G. Hessayon - it's well priced and packed full of concise information and diagrams :gnthb:

I seem to accumulate veg books like I do cookery books but the back-stop never-be-without is the "RHS encyclopedia of gardening" (links below). I also have the more specialist "RHS fruit and vegetable gardening" which is pretty good too but amazon seems to want £50+ for it; my copy is marked £20 so that's a bit odd.
Latest favourite is, oddly, "River cottage handbook No. 4, Veg Patch" which packs a lot in to a small volume, is very readable and at nine squd is a bit of a bargain I think.

An old favourite, although not primarily a "how to" book, is "Close to the veg" by Michael Rand. Well written and funny and with some down-to-earth (sorry!) tips.

RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening (RHS): Christopher Brickell: Amazon.co.uk: Books

RHS Fruit and Vegetable Gardening: Mike Pollock: Amazon.co.uk: Books

Veg Patch: River Cottage Handbook No.4 River Cottage Handbook 4: Mark Diacono: Amazon.co.uk: Books

Close to the Veg: A Book of Allotment Tales: Michael Rand: Amazon.co.uk: Books

"I also have the more specialist "RHS fruit and vegetable gardening"

I'll have to look out for that, a combined RHS book sounds like a bargain! I have the separate volumes

    "Growing vegetables"
    and
    "Growing Fruit"
(and a few others, bought in a rash moment of weakness, of course!)
