It is with a great deal of sadness that I have to tell you that Steve R passed away yesterday morning.

Steve R was a notable member of Gardeners Corner having joined in the early days of the forum. He will be remembered for championing ideas such as No Dig and was always on hand to offer advice on a wide range of topics: polytunnels, vegetable growing, photography, cooking (he was a trained chef) and cut flowers to name just a few. Some of us took part in his Giant Pumpkin growing and carving competitions, which he ran in a light-hearted manner. His sense of humour is summed up by his spoof threads, many of us were fooled by them as they were not always posted on the 1st of April, his "Cumbria is Closed" (due to budget cuts) sticks in my mind.

He was an expert photographer and offered his time to help us improve our skills. He taught many people the basics of Manual Photography by way of an online course, he ran one such free course over a period of several months specifically for Gardeners Corner members, teaching us how to get the best from our cameras.

In recent years his postings tailed away as he concentrated on his YouTube channel "Green Side Up" and he succeeded in building a large following from his Cumbrian Allotment.

Please feel free to share your memories and thoughts.

Both Mrs Shiney and myself knew Steve, and his wife Anne, quite well as we used to meet them on our twice annual trips to the Lake District but, sadly, haven't been up there since covid.

A very interesting and hospitable person with an intense love of his photography, fishing and veggie growing.

A sad loss of someone so young.

Oh that's a shock, I didn't follow him as such but he was always around for many years.
He was a very talented gardener.

I remember Steve too although we enjoyed different styles of gardening but it is always sad to lose a member.

Had a couple of interactions around my allotment and poly tunnel, was always there but rarely crossed paths. I will include Steve R in my prayers tonight.

That’s a shock, he couldn’t have been very old? I remember Steve well. He shared some of his photos here, very talented, his shots were always interesting and of high quality. I liked his style of veg growing, mixing the traditional while trying to innovate and utilise/repurpose what was at hand. A valued member.

Steve taught me how to take " proper " picture with my Lumix camera . He gave us on line teaching and I have a photo of my bark and leaves on the bathroom wall ,
Steve said it was good as I had captured the ' bokeh' effect very well ( more by luck than judgement ) . I had to look it us as I didn' t even know what it was,
                      thanks Steve ,

Although I didn't have much contact with Steve here on GC I'm sad to hear that he's passed away. A man of many talents who was happy to share them with many of us here as well as his contributions as a gardener.

My condolences to his family and friends.
