Any ideas as to what kind of bird this is designed to attract, bit worrying as its only about 10ft off the ground, in the park, nailed to an oak tree.

Hi Pete, looks like a Kestrel box to me.We used to see them round the local country park where we used to live and there was always a pair of Kestrels that nested in it each year and it was always quiet low down on the trunk of the tree.Nice photos [IMG]

Not for an owl then Kandy.
Kestrels, I think we do get them around here, are they the ones that hover over the motorways?

Cant help thinking it could get a lot of attention from the local yobs in that position.
The air rifles and catapults will be out taking pot shots.

Could be for a kestrel Pete, but I think still to low even for an Owl, you probably have seen one by the motorway its the only hawk that hovers

Didn't we see such last year? I'm thinking they are not for birds but for ?????? dormice/squirrels/other such vermin. I think they are put there by National Trusts or "protection" groups. There appears to be a metal door on the side ... you don't have that on bird boxes that I know of.

The door on the side is for members of ringing groups possibly the RSPB so that they can get to the chicks when the time comes for them to be weighed, counted and then rung. All the information is then sent to the BTO{British Trust for Ornithology}where all the information will be kept so that if the birds are found in another area later on then it will show in which location the birds were first bred.

The nest box deos seem low but we have seen them at about the same height.Other birds like Little Owls will use boxes that are like a long square tube and Tawny Owl boxes are totally different altogther [IMG]

Thanks all, no its different from the dormice boxes I posted about last year LoL, that particular piece of woods has been badly interferred with, due to building works.

Then there was what Woo described as bat boxes, but this is BIG.

PETE.... your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to monitor the nest box and report back to GCHQ as soon as you have information.

    Will do.
Hope it lasts out the summer :D

Just one question, How do the birds know what type of box is theirs, I mean we could get a blue tit with an extended family.
