Seems to be problem tree of the year - slowly sorting out the girlfriends rather neglected back garden - having cleared the ivy & bindweed, Ive discovered this cherry tree :

Can I save it ? the first lot of branches are over 1m off the ground, if I top it out there will it fill out lower down now that the light gets to it & it might get a bit more water - or should I just dig it out & start again ?

It looks OK, OxfordNick. It's a proper standard with a clear stem. You could take out the leader above the first whorl of branches, and shorten the longer branches, but do it in the summer during a good long spell of dry weather.
