I am looking for some advice please. The pictures below are of a clematis that I moved into it's current pot earlier this year and cut it down to within an inch of it's life. This is the growth it has put on this year and I am not sure what I should do about pruning it next spring :dunno:

Well, Salgo, sounds like a Group III for pruning, so it should be cut hard back, say to 3' feet around February to March. Could we have a pic of the flower so that it can possibly be identified.:D

      Hi Sally

has it got flower buds on now ??

Sounds like you have a Group 3

dont prune yet leave to late March
then you will see buds developing cut just above. You normaly leave about 8/9 inches dont do earlier as the old stems protect the shoots buds over the winter early spring

You dont have to cut them all down you could stager ie leave some at 25 inces etc if you wanted some flowers earlier

As an experienced clematis grower i would say that firstly you need to put it into a pot at least twice that size and you need an obelisk twice as big too.

These plants have a large root system and the depth of pot needs to be about 18" deep and the same wide, at least.
They also need more watering than you'd ever imagine, a wateringcan-full once or twice a week will not be enough.

I'd guess that yours could be Ville de Lyon but it could be any of a number of late flowerers.
As for pruning it next spring - do it in January/February - don't leave it until spring. It flowers on new/current years growth and you want a good lot of new stems and growth for maximum blooms. I would cut it down to about 8" above the ground.
Be mindful of slugs and snails and be liberal with pellets or all your new stems will disappear in days.

The kindest thing would be to plant it out in the ground but if you can't do that at least address the pot size asap.

          Spruce,

It has flowers just developing now. If I am going to put into a large pot should I do that after it finishes flowering or should I wait until I cut it back in January/February. On that point, our climate up here in Scotland is a bit harsher than down South, so would that mean that I should maybe leave it until February/March.

I will post a pic of the flower as soon as it appears.

Hi I would repot in the spring just as it breaks in to growth if you do it now the roots will just sit in the soil doing nothing plus coming to the end of the year and we dont want lots of fresh growth enjoy the blooms, me and Louise are down South she is right for down here, but with you leave the pruning till what I sugested late March.

            Its doing realy well
