Saw this growing wild while I was one my bike and took a few seeds. I've looked in my little wildflower book and can't find it. Can anyone help please.

I first thought chicory, but they don't look blue enough and perhaps not enough petals.

Ferral Endive/Lettuce? (shame all our gone to seed plants went to the hens last week)

Thanks everyone! I guess it is indeed Chicory. Is this the same plant as the sort people grow to eat? I don't know anything at all about this plant. Except that I'm sure some people eat it.

It needs blanching otherwise its very bitter. It should form a lettuce like thing in the first year and then go to seed in the second.

Like Scrungy said, if you let a lettuce/endive type thinger go to seed it'll produce similar flowers.

Isn't Chickory coffee made from the roasted root (all ground up after)? Lord knows why anyone would bother though when you could have an expresso instead!

It's added to Dandelion Coffee, which I drink.

Some of us have a bad reaction to normal coffee, used to drink loads of it, but I can't now :)

I would give up on life if that happened to me! To be fair, I never drink instant, and I do limit it to when I have visitors or every other day. Had four visits today though so I'm buzzing!

I forgot that I also grow Radicchio (red & green) in my lettuce beds and their flowers look even more like Chicory than the blue flowered lettuces http://www.iamtonyang.com/index.php?date=110703

But isn't that the same plant that @Silver surfer called chicory, but is sold as 'radicchio' and looks rather different? I can't check from seed packets because I don't have any as this is a plant I seed save from. But Franchi/Seeds of Italy sell Radicchio
so are Cicoria/leaf chicory the same thing as chicory? (it doesn't seem like it from cultivation instructions)

P.S. There's loads of these growing in the verges all the way from our plot back to our house.
