Sorry but seeing these threads aboyt wisteria is making me very envious. I live in a bungalow so i can't really have one wall trained against the house. The walls are covered with stuff anyway. One gable end has a concrete drive to the base of the house and the other gable end faces North. My question is this, can I grow one through a tree? I have plenty of spare trees around I just don't want to go to the expense if it is doomed to failure.

Shouldn't be a problem, they are like a vine. We've one growing up the seven foot stump of a tree and I'm training it to "cascade down."
You could do something similar, let it grow up as far as you wish and then train the top to go down. But don't choose a coniferous tree.

You can also grow them as stand alone standards. I found this picture on the web - try Googling Wisteria standard.

It is possible to have self supporting wisterias, but they take quite a bit of time to reach that stage. The tendency is for the plant to out-grow the self-supporting ability of itself, so it would have to be staked to start with and continually pruned to stop it becoming "top heavy."

Thanks Doghouse. I will give this a go.

Peter S I don't think I'll live long enough to see a standard wisteria reach a decent size:lollol:
