Has anybody here used these things before, do they work?

Apparently they are 100% deet, can anyone advise?

    Many thanks.

    Steve...:)

      @Steve R
I've used a spray on DEET solution abroad and it works pretty well, although I'm not someone who is particularly prone to insect bites.
Not sure how well a wristband would work though.
I don't like the idea of a high concentration of a chemical continuously against one area of my skin.

I'm a mosquito magnet so I'll be interested in the replies.
But, yes, like @NigelJ I'm a little concerned about the skin aspect.

I'm a mosquito magnet too, I shall be very interested to read any feed back on this subject :dbgrtmb:. I was listening to radio 2 yesterday & Dr Hillary Jones (I think it was him) recommended DEET, I might give that a try. :dbgrtmb:

Theres a big problem with these up in the north of this country.

Rather than using Deet based products, try to find one based on p-mentan-3,8-diol (PMD). It has far less side effects.

Please don't laugh, We used to use Avon skin so soft, when in Afganistan and Iraq worked a treat, Mrs T used to send me bottles of it. It smells of citrus.
There is also a wrist band you can buy called paraquito used them while on holiday in Mexico.

It's usually recommended that you don't use DEET in concentrations more than 50%.

The offshoot of a non-related university study some years ago found that people that eat Marmite are less likely to be bitten by mosquitos. It's thought to be the Vitamin B content that they don't like the smell of. Particularly the yeast extract that contains glutamic acid (a component of folic acid. Marmite should be avoided by people who have an allergy to MSG.

Conversely, the research found that mosquitos are attracted to the smell of bananas and can smell it on your skin, from about a mile away, if you have eaten bananas recently. So, if you're a mosquito attractor then avoid bananas.

If anyone is interested, I could post a recipe for a home made anti mosquito preparation that people with sensitive skin make here. It will take time though, as I would need to translate it. Alternatively use Google Translate to turn it into gibberish!

They seem to bypass me..........proberbly because there is not enough meat on me to bother....
It appears they bite everyone ,but not everyone has a reaction.

Eating marmite is supposed to repel borders but I'm not generally bothered by them thankfully. Wife is though so as long as she's about I'm safe lol

We were up in mosquito headquarters yesterday. As soon as I opened the carrier doors, they swarmed. As soon as we stepped into a sunny spot, with a breeze, we wereno longer bothered by them. The ones that decided to accompany us on the drive home were easily overcome by open windows and arm slapping. :)

I totally can endorse the Skin so Soft solution. Used it years ago when I had a cottage in mosquitoland many moons ago.

We don't have an issue with them here in the burbs. We are fined if potential breeding grounds are found on our properties. And I agree with making people empty standing water areas that support nothing but mosquito larvae.

Thanks you for the many varied replies.

I've used avon skin so soft for many years myself, as a angler...it is very well known in this country and it was many years ago that anglers joining the army used it and it's popularity spread (no pun intended!)

My partner is quite susceptible to insect bites so she was looking at a second line of defence after the sss, hence the original wristband question.

Has anyone tried the anti mosquito wristbands?

                              Steve...:)
