    That's my question .
After putting on a fantastic show for several weeks, the plants are rapidly succumbing to rust. I have cut off some of the flower stalks and am hoping to dry them in my greenhouse with the aim of collecting seed. Is it safe to do this, or will the fungus have affected the seed heads as well ?

I think the seeds will be ok to grow.
They seem to get rust most years anyway.

Thanks @pete. They did get a bit of rust last year but much later in the season.
It seemed to strike very quickly this year.

I'm not sure if its related to dry roots, similar to how some plants get powdery mildew towards the end of summer.

I think the cause is stress related, and dry roots would cause stress. In its weakened state rust takes a hold.
Seed should be ok, but the seeds may well have rust spores on them.
If you can keep the resulting plants stress-free then they should be ok.
The rust spores blow around in the air, so they are always around but a healthy pant can resist the infection. An unhealthy plant often cannot.
Rust is a very common problem with antirrhinums

Thanks @pete . It seems to be spreading at a heck of a rate. Due to life getting in the way, (and even if I had the inclination to try and fight it), I will be pulling them out next week when the weather cools down.
At least they put in a fantastic show for many weeks and the neighbours appreciated them !
I will clear the leaves from the flower stalks and hope for the best.
