    Help please.
On the Icon bar at the bottom of my screen are security notifications. With help I have removed all unwanted files from the PC and a full scan has cleaned the system but I can't get rid if the Icons and the pop up's warning of Trojans etc directing me to buy a package called Internet Antivirus Pro.

Hi Pal, as you know I'm not very 'good' with all this pc lark:) but I would be wary of anything asking you to buy something. I know someone else will come on & tell you what's best to do.

Won't your own security stuff deal with the Trojans? Good luck.

    cheers

Nick; it does sound dodgy as borrowers says. I've never heard of it but google throws up lots of sites that suggests its a bad thing and you have to remove it - trouble is most of them seem to be trying to sell their spyware removal software.

Found this from what looks to be a impartial website: "Internet Antivirus Pro, also known as InternetAntivirusPro, is a rogue antispyware application that created to destroy and decay our computer experience. We are unsure of its origin but itâ??s definitely as destructive as the previous variants. Internet Antivirus Pro is fake and malicious and destructive, with the intent of screwing up your computers..."

The site than has instructions on how to get rid of it manually, sorry I've not ever done this and it looks a bit technical - good luck!

A common way that malicious software gets itself onto your computer for keeps is it does a two pronged attack. First up, it installs itself on your machine, usually via an ActiveX component on a seemingly innocent website. Once installed, it modifies your registry, so that every time you access the internet, the first page to download is the one that installs the dodgy software.

Using this strategy, it means that your antivirus tool can find and fix the virus, only for it to come back next time you access the internet.

If this happens, and you're not backed up, there is still a fix but it is slightly tricky. There is a piece of software called 'HijackThis'. It scans your registry and looks for settings that appear to be non-standard and then presents them to you. You can select the entries you believe to be right/wrong, and then get the software to reset the rest. I say it is slightly tricky, it is easy to use but caution must be exercised because if you blitz a genuine setting, it could affect other legitimate software and/or windows settings.

Seems strange to call you 'clueless' when you are obviously 'clued up':gnthb:

My system shuts down the PC when updates are installed and did so three times during my tinkering...(I know nothing!:D)...the last time took ten minutes before it closed, and it's been ok since and seems to going a hundred miles an hour too!:thmb:

I was about to suggest a hijack this approach and see that Clueless has already stepped in with the suggestion. Be very careful with what you remove as he says.

I would suggest you download, install and run Hijack this then post its "Log" to a specialist forum here http://www.windowsbbs.com/malware-virus-removal/ it will take a day or two but you will receive specialist help there and they are very thorough. They analyse the log and advise from there but leave your machine, clean and safe.

    Steve...:)

I feel sorry for you, my system is written to avoid this problem. It just keeps working. Malware and virus doesn't work so is quite irrelevant. The system is free and the software is free, thanks to Mr Linus Torvalds of Finland and Mr Mark Shuttleworth of South Africa, supported by an army of programmers around the world.

Two thoughts: I wonder, when Microsoft get their 'Cloud computing' up and running, if it will make it easier of more difficult to keep your Windows PC 'clean' and how long will it be before the malware and virus authors turn their attention to Linux. It's been safe for a long time but that may change. ( I must be feeling doom laden today :) )

The Linux system is constructed in a totally different way, it does not have a registry, does not use .exe files nothing can be written to the system unless YOU supply the password, and you can make the password as difficult as you like. If anything did ever manage to damage the system you can download the latest version for free, wipe and re-install. A new version of Ubuntu is issued every six months and there are thousands of software packages, all free. You cannot install any software without the password.

Linux is built from day one to incorporate security features that Microsoft try to replicate, and usually fail. A default user account typically won't allow any software to install, and you will be prompted if anything decides it needs administrators (root) access, so you always know when something is happening.
