I've just got back from my allotment where I've noticed that one of the seed beds is swarming with ants - will they eat the seeds before they germinate? If so, is there an organic way to get rid of them or do I have to bring in the big guns?

I've never thought ants were a real problem Pimninpim.
I don't think they will eat your seeds but having said that I've just lost a big pot of Violas. They were looking just lovely then keeled over and died inexplicably. When I examined the pot it was moving with ants. Can't see any other source of problem so I'm blaming the ants.
So, I don't think they will eat your seeds, but might not do the seedlings any good.
Any ant experts out there ?

Use washing up liquid in water and douse them ... they hate it and die ...
