Just put little more peeling etc in my compost bin - yesterday I put in some shredded paper - and I noticed rather a lot of ants (50 or so maybe more). Is this a problem? If so what do I do.

    Many thanks

Your compost bin will be continually colonised by all sorts of insects and ants are some of the most adaptable and persistent.

Just give the compost a good turning over and make sure it's all damp. The outsides of the heap tend to dry out quite quickly.

Plenty of ants in ours and seem to do no harm. Just unearthed a slow worm around an hour ago, now the missus wont go near it at all!!

For some reason a 12 inch long snake-like thing seemed to scare her!?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that ants mean it's too dry in your bin and to chuck a bucket of water in... Don't suppose they're doing any harm though!?
