Hi, I have a question about ants that have decided to make a nest right at the bottom of my one year old rose bush, when I tend to the roses I can see the ants running up and down the stems, will this harm the rose bush, how should I get rid of the ants nest?

    Thanks

The Ants won't, but the herds of Aphids that they farm might.

Welcome to Gardeners Corner btw :sign0016:

Thank you Zigs, I did wonder about the aphids there does seem rather a lot. I also noticed that when tiny buds form they just seems to get eaten and turn brown.

I have read that ants can loosen the soil around the roots causing it to wilt and die!

So is that good or bad Zigs ? I believe in live and let live , if the ants are not doing any harm its OK by me. If they are in the wrong place its a blast with Ant-Stop.

The little blighters have been trying to set up home in several of my pots this year, initially they don't do any harm but established nests loosen the soil/compost and it fails to hold sufficient moisture thus requiring more watering as it just runs right through the pot!!! Sorry but they ain't welcome in my pots, don't mind so much if they're in the ground though :)
