Hi, this year i've decided to have a go at growing my own fruit and veg and I headed off to my local garden center and went quite mad. I bought loads of seeds and some compost.

Rocket, Carrots, Beetroot, Peppers, Tommys, Cress, Sprouts, loads of different herbs to name just a few.

I don't have a greenhouse so i'm using my bedroom window bottom to grow the seeds in little plastic cups and then when they are big enough to plant outside i'll transfer them to either big planters or dig myself a little veg plot at the end of the garden.

I have a few questions if thats alright:

    1. I sowed 4 or 5 seeds per cup, is this alright or should I only put 1 seed per container.

    2. I also bought a couple of propagators and in one I sowed peppers, tommys in the another. I can't decide where the best place to store them. Inside or out, dark place or light place.

    3. Which of the veg I've listed above will grow in plastic planters on my patio. Will root veg have to be planted in the ground.

    Here are some photos:

Can anybody tell me what this herb might be (either mint, coriander, parsley). I forgot what I planted. Also what are the dark bits on the top.

The Rocket leaves are coming on too

    Sprouts are just appearing

Mixed Lettuce also starting to appear

Now the following I bought from the garden center already grown and I'm planning on growing them in planters and use bamboo poles to train up, do you think their ready/big enough to plant out

1/depends what your growing but you should be ok to transplant when a little bigger.root veg like your carrots should really be sown straight into the ground, otherwise they may grow wonky if you dont transplant them perfectly straight

2/my peppers i started on the window sill in pot covered with cling film, did 4 to a 4" pot ,when 1 inch high stuck each one in 6" pot by itself, left in sunny window until about 10"high then put outside in cold frame.now there all in large containers and thriving, absolutely bursting wit buds!

3/just try it!if it works it works eh?

i'm no expert mate,i'm sure some folk on here can tell you much more than me!i'm of the opinion "just chuck it in some compost and see what it does"! if you got the containers and space ,try some spring onions in them, there a piece of cake to grow!just sprinkle the seeeds and cover 'em with compost and leave 'em,thin them when they a couple inch high

the herbs in question look like leeks and the black bits are the seed casings pushed up from the soil

I sowed some mint weeks ago in pots on my kitchen window bottom and nothing is showing. I sowed coriander and parsley and they are coming on well.

Is it common for mint to be slow at growing, the seeds were that tiny you could hardly see them.

The seedlings at the top could be chives if you say they are a herb,or onions, leek,or spring onion.

When the seedlings are bigger I would prick them out into individual plastic vending cups like you have on your window sill.I use clear plastic ones my husband brings home from work after work mates have had a drink of water and thrown them in the rubbish bin,I keep potting on once the roots have grown to a good size in each pot, until they are large enough to put out into the garden or vegetable patch...
