I hate to be a pedant, but if you are wiring this as a permanent fixture then it has got to be certified by a qualified electrician; failing to do so would invalidate your house insurance (even if this installation is not the cause of any claim)

This, coupled with the fact that it is an outside switch, and the fact that you need to ask (NOT a criticism by the way), suggests to me that you might be better to get a sparky to install and certify in one hit.

        Absolutely, especially with outside stuff.

I am always reluctant to pull the 'rules' card on things like this, as I am confident with electrics and electronics myself; the problem is, if I were to give you instructions, and then your house burned down and it wasn't certified, I would (potentially) be liable (welcome to modern life!).

A decent sparky shouldn't charge (no pun intended) you too much for a job like that.

A lot of people nowadays are too comfortable with electrics - and whilst we have the safest electrical system in the world in the UK, 240v mains remains lethal if not handled correctly.

Best of luck in finding a sparky.

I put mine on a 3amp fused spur in doors hide behind the curtains, you would need to use a fused spur for the switch if you intend taking power from a socket anyhow might be worth doing away with the switch and have two fused spurs, i am not a sparks but know a little if your unsure get someone in as FC says.

Can we ask what and where you are using it for and if you ever intend to have 13a outdoor sockets ?
eg - If it was for use in a shed or garage you need to fit a small 2 way IP rated RCD consumer unit in there first.

Also is there any cable that will be exposed outdoors, eg the need to be using armoured cable ?

              Hi Ricky,
The two 3 amp fused spurs one feeds outdoor perimeter lights the second feeds a Victorian style light all connected to armoured cable,

Ive not got round to doing sockets but i am fully aware of whats needed but thanks for the heads up its BigC that needs advice not me lol.

Thanks for the advice guys...I do know an electrician who hopefully wont charge the earth lol
I need the switch for the waterfall pump and the outside light near the bin store.. The thought of it being outside and handy appealed to me rather than having to run to the garage and back...Thanks again for making me aware of the insurance side of things @Fat Controller it never even entered my mind as I usually do odd jobs myself...and if it had only been a single switch instead of a double I probably wouldn't even have posted here...

                    Hi,

Most electrical fittings come with a detailed wiring diagrams these days, though if you are stuck on how to wire one of those up, it does rather suggest you are out of your depth in that area and so should avoid doing such work for the reasons above, better safe than sorry .

What has always made me wonder is that probably half the households in the country will have done some form of diy electrics and even gas connections, though you do not seem to read about problems with insurance payouts.

What does surprise me more is all the diy house building programs where the 'novices' do all the electrics themselves as if its a normal diy job that anyone can do just like that !
So how do they get the work certified and approved for mortgage and insurance etc ?

Having re-wired our house (+ armoured underground cable to the shed) myself before they brought in these 'nanny state' regulations, I've never seen the point of them, but a quick google found a forum post with somebody asking if they could drill through their external wall into a the back of a first floor ring main socket outlet back box to connect external lighting to that ring main, then went on to ask whilst they were at it, if it was also OK to connect another cable to the same first floor ring main socket and take into down to feed a new socket in the kitchen below!
