    P1050968.JPG P1050964.JPG I can't remember who on this forum has got any Army,Navy,Airforce experience.

Another session over at my late FiL's garage has turned up a couple of old wooden boxes with some sort of writing on the side of them and we would like to ask if anyone can tell us exactly what they are and what they were used for in their former life.As we didn't know they were there until after my FiL passed away we have no history of where he aquired them from...
Sorry a couple of photos are a little blurred but the lighting wasn't too brilliant and the flash and camera shake hasn't helped:sad:

    Here are the photos...Thanks:smile:

Ex Navy but not sure on these. The plugs could be from canon / field gun perhaps but they look more like equipment more than ammo crates

I've tried running the supply codes through certain indexes but came up with nothing definite. I would think the best bet is to e-mail the nearest Military Museums with a pic and I'm pretty sure they would be able to identify it or, if not, know some organisation that could.:coffee::snorky:

                Hi Kandy,

I can't see where abouts you live, or i could give you some names, but, you could get in touch with a local auction house.

Militaria is very hot at the moment, and they would be able to do the necessary research and give you a free valuation.

One thing I have noticed while researching is that the boxes, after initial use, were used as Foot Lockers to stow service personnel's personal items.:coffee::snorky:

Ex RN so I am not familiar with those boxes other than as said by Loofah, more for some type of machine part than armament
Ammo usually comes in a metal box, and it has the size as "ball"

If you ease the lid off, and inside it is damp and has SARIN stamped on it run like hell

P1050965.JPG P1050969.JPG Good morning everyone and many thanks for your help:smile:

Where my late FiL lived is 17 miles from where I live and although he lived nearer to Bedford his Council Tax came under Towcester:biggrin:

None of us have a clue where he aquired the boxes from as he was in the Army but wasn't able to fight due to a shoulder injury so assumed he must have got them after the war? The long box believe it or not is full of car parts because he was a hoarder so as one car got to old to run anymore he would strip it down and then hoard the parts in case he needed them in the future:scratch::sad:

I will pass on the Info to Mr Kandys sister as she likes to do research on things like this and she is going to see if her daughter and son in law want the long box as he used to serve in the RAF and likes all things like this, but as my niece hasn't inherited the hoarding gene she might not want it:biggrin:

I for got to add this photo yesterday as I thought I had taken two of the same photo so I think the date stamp is April 1945:scratch: And this is what is inside the long box...

Strange as it was only the otherday I came across a couple of gerry cans in my shed dated 1945.

I asked a friend, who goes to a local show around here called "War and Peace", if they might have a value, he said he would take them along this summer and reconed perhaps 25 to 50 quid each was possible.
The re enactment people are always on the look out for genuine old military stuff it appears.

I remember my dad getting them from a local scrap yard in the early 60s when we had paraffin heaters in the house, was not unusual to buy 4 gallons for the week back then.

After that I used the paraffin for greenhouse heaters, couldn't afford to buy 4 gallons a week these days:biggrin:
