[IMG] I spotted this while out walking the other day. I was wondering what it is. I have to say it looks vile. About 12" long, & at the top of a Sloe bush. The outside looks like very thick cobweb, but there is obviously something inside..!!!! Surely this is TOO BIG for a spiders nest??? Any ideas??? ;)

So what do you all reckon..!!! Sorry pics are not cleared, but it is at the top of the bush in the full sun..

Could be a Brown-tailed Moth nest - a real pest, especially in coastal ares but seems now to be found inland as well. If so - keep away from it! The caterpillars can cause various health problems. A lot of local councils have eradication programmes. Can't think of anything else that favours sloe among its food plants and looks like this... so that'd be my guess!

 Well yes it does look like a caterpiller "tent"!! I suppose Liz. [IMG]
Not seen any caterpillers yet, bar one which was a Cinnabar moth larvae.
It was just the one. They only only feed on ragwort - they're black and orange caterpillars. I have not found anything to say they build this tent affair. Plus there is NO ragwort anywhere around there or here come to that.

[IMG] I look each time I pass, but have not seen anymore. I shall walk down that way later & have a look. [IMG] It just looks horrible, if you know what I mean......

Eeeuuugghhhh - I know exactly what you mean! I haven't seen anything like it before - and would have hazarded a guess at spiders' nest - but looking at the links etc, have to agree, it does look caterpillar-esque. *shudder*

Marley I would have to know what was in it can you not borrow a bio-hazzard suit and do some more investigating, we would(or some of us would)appreciate it.
