Any ideas what this hole in the wall might be?

Dismantling the kennel I found this thingy. It's in the wall of the fairly new extension where the bathroom is. The black wood is unrelated, it's just part of the kennel.

Clearly something is supposed to be screwed into it, like an outdoor tap- but there already is an outdoor tap elsewhere.

The bathroom sink is approximately on the other side of the wall.

    Thanks!

Is there a pipe going through the wall from the other side, or a mark to indicate one might of? looks like a back plate for an outside tap.

I'm totally non DIY so most things I say about it tend to be wrong - but if it was for an outside tap would it not have been best to be connected to something that comes off the rising main in order to have the pressure?

Is that a thread inside the hole.
Unscrew it and see if the house falls down.

It looks kind of familiar but something is missing.

It looks like an old fashioned Gas or Water Pipe Flange, probably that someone has used as an outlet for an outdoor tap or even to pass an electrical cable through.

Could someone have connected a previous basin overflow to it ? Modern basin overflows are usually internally connected the the plug hole drain.

You say that it is a wall of a fairly new extension. Are you able to date it approximately?
I would try to loosen the screws - they look newer than the plate. See if it moves.

If it is for an outside tap it looks to be a rather amateurish bit of work. We have two outside taps, different buildings, and all they have is a hole in the brickwork marginally bigger than the pipe. :noidea:

If it's was for a outside tap i would have thought it to be just screwed to the wall where the pipe would have come out
Also there looks like the hole through the wall was a bigish hole and filled in

may be an old over flow pipe from a old bathroom sink

If there were steps or similar nearby I would say it looks like the kind of bracket to fix a support rail (hand rail) to. However if the hole goes right thru the wall that would rather rule that out.

Thanks for replies- I'm starting to go for old outdoor tap that was decommissioned when the kennel was built.

The extension is, judging by the condition of the grouting and the bricks, perhaps 80s? The house is from between the wars and around 80s time loads of similar extensions were built around here.

The teal colour plate feels like ceramic (doesn't make any ping when tapped with a screw).

The other side of the wall has been re-tiled not in too distant past so I can't see anything.

I will not unscrew anything if indeed it turns out to be the crucial part of the structure holding the whole house up
