I recently moved into a flat. Some land came with it and that's just been fenced off and now I need some ideas about what to do once the rubbish is cleared. The land is 0.3 acres in size and the trees are on the west side. I can spend some time at weekends and I'm thinking about growing veg, planting a lawn etc. but really no idea where to start so any suggestions are welcome!

oooh, that's a luvvly plot Lawrence. Oodles of fun and games ahead for you! My advice; not the "bull at a gate" technique - instead, a measured "bit at a time" approach will make it bearable. Just remember to take sequential photos of your work ( and post 'em here ) then you will see and appreciate the progress you have made.
    Rome wasn't....and all that,

    looks a nice blank canvas......:dbgrtmb:

The world is your oyster there @Lawrence251 :)

Looks like you need the design talents of GC's very own @JWK, @Kristen and @al n but to name a few; I am rubbish at design, do cannot really help I'm afraid, but I will watch your progress with interest :dbgrtmb:

Nice space!! And a great canvas to start with!

Google some pics on garden design, and look on Pinterest for pics.
Put a list of what you like, what you would want, what your going to use it for and go from there.
Sketch the hard landscaping and where you want it. Break it down into segments and jobs and enjoy.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like to put something in to partially hide the fencing and I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this. Something that grows reasonably quickly and isn't wildly expensive would be great. I like darker greens, unlike next door's huge golden leyandii (on the extreme right of the second photo).
