So Mr Jane as usual is proving a pain to buy for this Christmas and has hinted that he would like some more jazz music to add to his large CD collection. Are there any particular artists that I should look into. I got him a Miles Davis compilation a few years back which he really enjoyed and so was hoping to go for something similar.

Also he likes the blues too and have no idea where to start here too. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks everyone :)

It's a very large genre and depends on whether he likes the traditional type of blues such as that sung by people such as Josh White (quite heavy), or the more popular mix of blues, jazz and swing from the first half of the 20th century (such as Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Helen Ward etc.).

One of the first early recordings of popular Blues was, of course, St Louis Blues. This is typical of the mix of blues, jazz and swing as it has been recorded at all types of tempos.

Billie Holiday is considered one of the best blues singers and she lived the terrible sort of life that typical blues songs portray.

There was a fairly good CD that Hallmark brought out of a mix of the above mentioned female singers plus people such as Ella FitzGerald, Dinah Shore, Peggy Lee, Helen Forrest etc. It may be difficult to find as there have been a lot of other artists that have CD titles the same. If I remember correctly the Hallmark number for the CD is 303602.

Any problems, I might be able to help so PM me. :blue thumb: some of my contacts in the music business might still be around :old:

Jazz is a very wide genre and also very much a matter of personal taste. If he likes Miles Davies then one favourite of mine is Miles and Quincy Live at Montreux
There are also many modern jazz musicians worth a listen. I enjoy, among others, Courtney Pine (saxophone), EST (a Swedish Modern Jazz Trio) and Lyambiko (Vocalist based in Germany, not well known over here).
