Been thinking of joining the RHS and was wondering what people thought of membership. Any members?

After my trip to Kew I was thinking of joining (cheaper for me only £19.00 :D) so would be interested if there were any members on the forums as well

I joined a year ago, and recently renewed.

I don't get to visit many gardens, so only slightly benefit from cheaper admissions, and I dont get the chance to go to the shows, so don't benefit from ticket price reductions, but I get it for the magazine. the 12 issues i'd say are worth subscription alone.

Plus, you get "free" (just P&P) seeds once a year from RHS gardens

We quite like going to the Chelsea Flower Show (although usually only go every other year; but other years we give the tickets to someone else). Not cheap though. (And especially not cheap when you get there and make a few impulse-purchases!)

And there are a few RHS gardens we visit - we have friends who live near Wisley for example.

"The Garden" magazine is NOT, IMHO, a good reason for joining though ...

Have been a member for a number of years ... went to Chelsea once, otherwise it is only the magazine I benefit from
I am too lazy to bother to cancel my membership[
I doubt its value though :)

I was a member for quite a few years as I live very close to Wisley, so it was easy to pop there. But we started to go less and less, and let it lapse and just pay on the gate whenever we go now (about twice a year). The only thing I miss is the free seeds they distribute at the end of the year, you are allowed to apply for whatever they collect in their gardens, so it was always a bit of fun getting growing stuff out of the ordinary.

It is one of those things, it may not be of great finiancial benefit to you, but you join just for the pleasure.
I myself am not a member, but our Gardening club has affiliated membership, so if we go as a club we get in for free.
We are going to Wisley on the 23rd July, all it is costing is the coach fare £10.
But if I lived near to either Wisley, Kew or Chelsea then definately I would join!

Makka, as far as I know RHS membership doesn't get you into Kew, I think they are a different organisation.

I am a member and am lucky to live less than three miles from RHS Harlow Carr. So I get good value for money as I visit regularly, and borrow a lot of books from their library.

One aspect I like is the seed scheme. For a £10 admin fee you can get up to 20 packets of seeds at no extra cost. That's good value in its own right. But the bonus is that you get seeds that you might never buy (or see offered) in a garden centre. So it is an opportunity to be introduced to new plants.

Kew is a separate one, which gets you entry into Kew plus about 10 or so other places for free. As they give you about a dozen visitors passes it works out a good deal.

I joined about 3 years ago. I also live near Harlow Carr, so I visit there quite a bit and I find it inspirational. Plus you get a great morning tea at Betty's!

I've also been to Chelsea a couple of times and I've used the email-an-expert problem solving service, which has been very useful.

I was a member when I lived near Wisley and used to visit the gardens frequently. It was also handy for visiting other gardens too, as you get a discount on many of them. I think it's worth it if you think you will use it a lot (a bit like NT membership).

Surely you join to support the principles of RHS...what ever they are. Like people who join National Trust or RSPB. Has life and charity come down to simple economics ?
