Any suggestions re computer game for 8 year old?

My great-grandson is computer mad and is hoping for computer games
at Christmas. While I don't entirely agree with him spending hours on a computer
(like what I do  ) does anybody know of a game that is sort of educational.

I have no idea what is available and although I have googled it is difficult to tell
    just from the titles.

jjordie I didn't know there were any computer games that were educational you may have a fruitless search, take your ggs on nature walks and round the garden be much better for him in the long run,was in the garden the other day nearly all the kids going past had their heads down texting even saw one on a bike texting, they will end up with an extra large thumb with all that excercise,I pity todays generation.

I agree with that Walnut - but he doesn't live very near so I only get to
see him two or three times in a year.

He is a very active boy - goes swimming and plays badminton so time
on a computer game is not too bad. Know what you are saying about
lots of the kids today though as they couldn't survive without texting!

Also, to my mind, he is quite intelligent for his age - but I suppose lots
    of ggrans would say that.

 ponders - perhaps he'd like a mobile phone so that he can text!!! (only joking)

When my son was that age I didn't like him having access to our family PC - so we never encouraged him to play PC games unless supervised (accidental access to dodgy internet sites, mucking up PC settings were considerations).

He had a Nintendo handheld console instead which cost about £90 ish, then games for it are £20 to £30 each. Some of the games are (sort of) educational like the Brain Training one (been advertised on the telly a lot), and he could play unsupervised OK on it.

It is an expensive route - but he buys most of the games himself now with money he's been sent for xmas/birthdays.

The ones I meant are based on historical events and then elaborated. I have games that are quite old though, so you might be advised to visit the shop Game (in all shopping centres) and ask them there. Or ask them anyway what they would advise, that is if he is into strategy sort of games!

Thanks for advice. I will have to speak with his mother.
