I finally gave in after numerous infections and had my wisdom teeth out. Has anyone else had them done? How long did the pain & swelling last for?. Think that the bleeding has stopped now so thats an improvement since this morning.

papajo, poor you! if the swelling doesn't improve soon perhaps you need some antibiotics?
Over the years I have had infection problems and ended up having to take anti-biotics. Also had to be careful re the bleeding as I am on anti-coagulants. It will be painful if you still have an infection in the gums so if that is the case see your dentist again.
    Hope it's soon better [IMG]

Poor you Papajo :( Had mine out years ago along with some others - looked like I'd been hit by a truck for at least a week  with a face like the Pilsbury dough boy  2nd week the bruising went a lovely shade of yellow - attractive!!! The pain did ease after a couple of days, but I took all the tamazepam and codeine they gave me,so it must have been bad!!
When did you have them out?

I had one out some time ago and it took about a minute to remove, a smaller tooth forward of that took 45 minutes to remove, along with a bit of jaw bone.
I think it depends on the roots.
If you had all four out papajo at the same time it must be a real problem, good luck. [IMG]

Thanks everyone for the replies. I had three wisdom teeth out on Monday morning. The swelling isn't too bad and pain killers are keeping things under control. Just needed a bit of reassurance that the swelling was normal. This is the first teeth that I have had removed. It's very different to them just falling out themselves.

Windy - I'm so glad I never asked before I got them out what it would be like. From your experience I don't think that I would have got them out.

Yes remember the pain very well.I had to go into hospital to hav emy wisdom teeth out all 4 at the same time.
I went in on the Sunday should have been in for 3 days was in more than a week as they could no tget my temp down and the swelling.

I also took a nose bleed under the anasethisc remember the colour of the brusie.

Had to eat with a straw for few weeks all food had to be liquidised.

    Hope pain is easing.

    Papajo,
Not sure mine was a typical experience  All 4 of my wisdom teeth were growing upside down, so think they had to dig about a bit  Also, one of the other teeth I had out at the same time caused some sort of problem with my sinuses - they kept telling me over and over not to blow my nose, sniff or sneeze! - for 5 weeks afterwards!!! Think they dislocate your jaw to get at 'em -that's why you're swollen.
Do hope your feeling a bit better(gremlins aren't working(?) but there should be a lovely flashing heart here!!!)

Papajo I remember my Dentist telling me after thatall 4 of my roots were badly twisted that is why I had to go into hospital as my mouth was too small for him to get my teeth out and that I had to basicly be knocked out.

I think I was 28 when I got my wisdom teeth out .

Thanks again, by all accounts I seem to have got off lightly. This morning I actually feel like I can move my jaw slightly and ice has really reduced the swelling. All I could think was my dentist saying that it would be worth it in the end. Right now, I'm not so sure. The worst part of it was Monday & Tuesday were such lovely days and I was stuck in the house with tooth /mouth ache.

Moaning over, thanks for all the support.

I had mine out in January 1971. You had to go to hospital then and spend the night.

I remember waking up after the op and a nurse asking if I wanted something to eat. I declined the toast that was on offer.
