I have this weed (?) growing like wildfire in my garden at the moment. It seems to grow like crazy under and around a little bush i have in particular but is spreading out all around that area including an area separated by concrete blocks.

As you can see on its base on my desk here, it has a white root which is kinda unusual (?) and the stems towards ground level seem to develop towards being a bronze colour?

    Any ideas at all?

Hope somebody knows :) Im a little worried in case it is Japanese knot weed or something...

    Andy.

Thanks Jenny & Aesculus. Reassuring it is at least not Japanese knot weed :) yes it is healthy. I have been pulling them out at the roots but the roots seem to have nodes on them and im wondering if that is helping it to spread? Perhaps some kind of weed killer might be better?

Hmmm....it does look like it. It has come close to flowering Lolimac with buds appearing but i have never allowed it to actually flower. I keep pulling them up but they don't seem to go away and are just spreading out. Perhaps the best route to get rid of it is to dig the area over so i can be sure to get the roots (?)

Just went out in the garden and took another look and under one of the shrubs that is low to the ground there were some that were starting to bud though not flower. It looks like they are darkish almost purple in colour buds. I think Marley may have hit the nail on the head with enchanters nightshade. it IS growing mostly on damp mulched soil under bushes. I dont have a LOT of it but it is spreading where those areas exist and its a constant battle i could do without :)

Thanks everybody for your help with this one :) At least as i know what it is i stand some chance of dealing with it :-)

I gently loosen the soil with a fork before I pull or dig the Enchanters out Andy.. The white roots are a nightmare & break easily.. Little bits of them left in the soil start new plants...
A systemic weedkiller would be good to use if you could as that kills to the roots..... I cannot use it on the Enchanters I have as it rassles around in a border & shared hedge..

Thank you everybody so much! :-) The fork is an excellent idea so i will try that around the ares it is growing. And then when i have it a little more under control i can use weed killer a little more sparingly :) Thanks everybody. This has really put my mind to rest :)

yeah cape gooseberry leaves are pretty furry, and [mine at least] are more circular bush shaped than the picture... im not sure cape gooseberries would spread that rampantly either, as my outside plants havent grown at all this season
