anybody know what this is

    hi,i bought these bulbs years ago,they would grow leaves then die back never flowering.decided to dig them up and move them somewhere else over December and what do you know a few weeks later I get this :).been so long since I bought them I'v forgotten what they were.any ideas?

      Amaryllis belladonna. A South African bulb that likes sunny well drained conditions. Leaves appear in winter and die off late spring. Not fully hardy, really hate cold wet conditions. Require a good sunny spot to flower regularly. Mine flower in autumn.

        thanks a mill,to me their indigenous then growing them in sunny Joburg SA.i moved them just a couple of meters cant imagine the conditions were to different,well a change is as good as a holiday so they say.

          I agree, Belladonna. It gets leaves in spring, then they die and when you have forgotten all about them in about October, up comes this leafless stalk with these glorious flowers, hence their common name of "naked lady". They like an east facing wall under the eaves in dry soil.

            for years all I got was just leaves,maybe all the effort was going into new bulbs,started with 2 and pulled up 6 and they aren't small bulbs.
