I have a question about catching a big goldfish.

Also - anyone fishing lately, or whenever. I fish a lot.

I tried lure fishing off 2 local beaches last week, nothing around yet, although the great big Seal off one of them wasn't helping.

It's about now that the Mackerel swim up the English Channel toward the North Sea, when they come there are lots of them.

You want to speak to @Bilbo675 about Goldfish, he catches some huge ones according to Facebook :)

I only get a chance to fish a couple times a year. Soon I will be taking that trip to do so. Last time between my husband and myself we caught 35 fish. We were neck to neck counting to 10 then I just quite counting.

Yes I go fishing (fresh water) in the summer months about twice a week depending on the weather,I fish a lake that is about 5 acres in size.It has a good head of silver fish( bream/perch/roach etc) with a lot of carp up to 24 ld in weight, with a lest 2 catfish of 48 ld and 36 ld * the chap who is in charge has been there 12 years and was told that there where cat's in there but last year was the first time that he saw these fish, both caught within 3 weeks of each other. My biggest fish up to now is a common carp of 11 ld,i've had perch tp21/2 ld.

Here is my goldfish question -s. The local school has a weed filled pond I net bait from, and caught some of my pond fish there. I once saw a big goldfish, over two foot long I would guess. my wife wants me to catch it and bring it back for my pond.

I told her we should throw in a few canned corn kernels every day for a week and then put the same out on a hook. Any refinements?

The other thing is if a huge goldfish will dig in my pond's muddy bottom all the time and keep the water cloudy. I once heard they do this. My pond is 40 X 45 f00t. I have comet goldfish about 6 inches long already but the great blue herons may eat them (they went in 2 inches long)

Also to transport it, 2 minutes, do I need to find something to carry it in full of water - or just a wet cloth.

Will they be in long? Or is it mostly passing through. Here the Spanish Mackerel will be in in August but they are hard to catch from the shore, But I try occasionally.

Has the sea fishing gotten better in England? It has been years for me; in Ramsgate it was terrible when I used to go there - 10 years ago.

I would say your idea of sweet corn might work, pre bait for a while and give it a go.Also could you try bread in small pieces as I find this is a good bait for carp.On the lake I fish there are 2/3 Koe carp and these often fall for this, just a thought might work.

There's one big drive that goes up to the North Sea, but loads hang around during the summer.

The main lot follow the bait fish back down the Channel in September/October, can be some good fishing then :)

Zigs, would you post a photo, or better, a video?

have you tried a vacuum packing device, bags are expensive but can be washed and re-used. They really make a huge difference to the quality of kept fish. I have a small chest styl freezer which I love - and with its colder temperatures and no defrost cycle really keeps fish well - the dark and oily ones like mackerel are the hardest to maintain quality.

These are mostly what I fish for as a single species, but collectively get about 7 kinds of fish - and you see the crabs, we trap those.

The redfish above have to be 18 inches, and the daily limit is 3. They get to 60 lbs but I catch them in the 2 to 10 pound size. They eat shrimp, crabs, and fish, I use small fish I net or lures.

So my neighbors son just knocked on our door asking us, actually he asked the whole street if anyone wanted some fish. Seems his dad caught 100 fish. Like really, I am not into cleaning any today. My freezer is full. Why did he not stop at 20 fish. Husband says he's not into cleaning all them. Hope he calls his church to come get some.

I have a portable, battery powered vacuum packer device which uses re-usable bags (they have a connection a bit like on an airbed/lilo but work in reverse. I can fillet & pack on the beach (pressing a chopping board down on top with them placed on a seat box keeps them nice and flat) then place them in my two 22L 12v electric chiller boxes with some frozen 1L freezer packs on top and either head for home or to back to our tent (with electric hookup and freezer pack freezing facilities to keep everything at slightly less than fridge temps for an extra day) or back to a caravan which has a freezer.

So I'm usually set up to get all my catch back home, but some less prepared people (when the conditions are right) catch hundreds of fish and have no way of dealing with them. I always carry a spinning rod, so when it looks like I'm going to max out on feathering for mackerel, I can slow things down a bit and catch them one at a time.

I've found frozen mackerel are OK when used in a soused mackerel recipe.

Zigs, someone said they had a hard time posting from Flickr - I do all my pictures from there and it is easy but takes two steps.

I forgot about this thread, and thankyou for all your replies, please talk of any catching under 'edible gardening' the 'processing the harvest' thread. I am not fishing much, but usually fish I catch are a large part of what we eat, along with the chickens and garden.

Scrungee; amazing setup and excellent processing. I mostly fish right near so just bring them home and fillet on the truck tailgate - but often take a cooler with ice to keep them. Some of our fish, like Spanish mackerel, white trout, need immediate iceing and going very quickly into the fridge/freezer. The ones like redfish and flounder are not bothered by being warm for a couple hours - and it is hot here.

these are all I have been catching lately, some warmouth brim (obviously named for the bream of UK) for my pond - I am about to release these into the pond where they will be fed and eaten when big, or just left as pets.

this is how we catch bait, and some food fish too, a cast net you throw and pull back - extremely effective!
