2 years ago I decided to grow a apple tree from seed. I got 20 apple seeds grew then to seedlings pinched out the weak ones next year culled 8 that showed any signs of weak leaf growth this year down to my final 4 one has very clean string branching other good young growth start of year the other had some drought tolerance and the last was the best still in full health leaf in November and strong root growth , it was an exciting experiment that will be on going I will prob keep doing this every year , I am only using gala apples at the moment.
I know that apples almost never come tree to seed and with added variation of cross pollination even more so. But if you had a self fertile apple tree with no other apple trees about would the seed still be as variable and grow totally different aplle our would it be more similar?

Unless you are looking for a new variety there is no real point in growing apple trees from seed.

You will probably end up with some nice trees, could be a few years before they flower, but they will be a new variety.
