    merrymeet all!
I bought one of those slimline apple trees earlier this year. It is in a large planter with the correct soil but i dont know wether i should feed it at this time of year or what type of feed i should give it.

    Any advice welcome.

Sulphate of Potash in the spring, no harm in giving them the chicken manure also.

Hi, willow. Is that one of those Apple Trees you get from places like Van. Meuw. that aren't supposed to throw out any side-shoots? I've got one myself(first year). Did yours' throw out any side shoots? Mine's grown about 18" and has got little black buds, close to the stem that I hope are flowering shoots for next year. Did you get any cultural instructions with it? Sorry for so many questions but I started a thread about this ages ago and didn't get any response.

hi cajary, soz for not gettin bak to you (hubby hoggin the comp lol).

I got my apple tree from a place called Strikes here in yorkshire. it didnt come with instructions but i did ask wot soil i should put it in and they said john innes No 2 or 3 with crocks at the bottom for drainage. Mines got little black buds on too and iv been told they are the shoots that will come next spring. Mine is not self pollinating so i need to get another. do you know if yours is? The garden centre told me that when you get one of these apple trees it takes about 2-3 years for them to produce fruit. Thats for my type tho. keep in touch and we'll compare how they grow eh?

Hi, willow. Yeah, mine's self-pollinating. It had to be, I've only got room for one!
I contacted V.M. and they said to cut off all the side-shoots (which I've done.) It'll be interesting to see how ours develop but we probably won't know much until Spring. Mine did have a flower on it this year but I pruned it off to allow the strength to go into the root system.Good Luck! [IMG]

All the leaves have fallen off now. (Much to the g-daughters disgust but I've explained that it's just sleeping)
I've got small black buds close to the stem which, I presume, are leaf buds. I've got thicker buds just proud of the stem, would they be flower buds?

Thanks, willow. I can relax until Spring, now. I've got Spring Snowflakes in flower. I went onto www.metcheck.com and the flowers might get a bit of a shock next week. ;)

Willow, there is one basic rule of planting. If the plant is in a pot it can be planted at any time of the year as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged, if the plant is bareroot, it must be planted between October and Febuary.
