A few weeks ago I bought 2 apple trees, about 3.5 ft in height, from a very reputable Garden Centre. I can't do very heavy digging (had back surgery) so was relying on a gardener who cuts the grass etc to plant them. He is notoriously unreliable and has not kept his appointments.

He is comming this week, but with the frost/snow up here in Lancs, I dont know whether to just leave them in the containers and plant in Spring, or get him to plant them at the weekend.

Any and all advice gratefully received.

Hi As they are in pots you're fine to leave them until you're ready to plant out.

You don't want to be planting anything if the ground is frozen, but wait for a mild spell.

Many thanks. Should I put them inside a bigger pot - without de-potting- and cover the tops with a bit of compost for protection? Or is that not necessary.

Get them in the ground as soon as you can (but as mentioned not in frozen earth); the roots will start to form over winter.
While they're being stored it wouldn't hurt to give a bit of protection also keep them in a fairly sheltered position; I wouldn't worry about repotting.
