It partly depends on the variety of apple, early ripening ones (like Worcesters or Discovery) won't store at all (but then in my garden the Worcesters seldom make it into the house before being eaten!).

With later varieties, I store mine the way my Dad did - in the garage (or indeed anywhere dark, cool but frost free). Choose only perfect fruit, wrap each one individually in a square of newspaper and lay them gently in boxes - I'm lucky, I've got some of those old-fashioned wooden fruit trays and bushel boxes, but anything so long as the air can circulate. Store different varieties separately.

Over the years, I've found the best way was:
    1) to select the fruit for storage very carefully and avoid any damaged or bruised specimens
    2) wipe them clean with dry kitchen roll
    3) put them in plastic bags of about 2kg maximum size
    4) prick some small holes in the bags to allow a little ventilation
    5) put the bags somewhere cool and dry e.g. under the stair
    6) check them every so often

It's a bit of a balancing act, you're trying to avoid them drying out or turning to mush. You can also buy special green plastic bags with some sort of preserving function (Lakeland used to sell them) and they're ideal for this task.

I take the cardboard apple boxes from Sainsburys with the fruit trays in them (those sheets of cardboard/paper that have the indentations in them for each apple). They only get thrown out so Sainsburys are happy for you to take them.

So as not to be accused of discrimination :hehe: :- there are other stores that have them as well.
