    Hi everyone,

Hope you're all well and enjoying your beautiful gardens :)

Our next little garden project is going to be creating a little tranquil seating area and a new pond.

We want to build an arbour to go over a bench and then grow climbers over the arbour, but they will need to be planted in pots rather that direct in the ground.

The area is quite sheltered and west facing. What climbers would do well in pots? They can be good sized pots and deep if needed, to try and ensure they do well. Something scented too would be ideal as it's going to be a nice seating area whilst overlooking the pond.

Would Jasmine do ok do you think? Any recommendations very much appreciated.

    :ThankYou:

Many clematis’ do well in pots. Roses, on the whole, and honeysuckle don’t.

It may be a good idea to find a way of preparing a hole in the ground for planting, or making big raised beds either side of your arbour @Sienna's Blossom, then you`ll have much more success with lots of plants I think :)

I've used a mixture of Roses, Honeysuckle, and Clematis on my Arbor

There's around 5 Honeysuckle on either side with Rose "Alchemist" on your left and Rose "Compassion" on your right, with Rose "Creme de la creme" just added on the right. They are, admittedly, planted in the ground but there's no reason why Roses, Honeysuckle, or Clematis couldn't be grown in pots if they're large enough and you feed the plants.:snorky:

Firstly I'd make sure the arbor was built to last, as it might well have to stand upto all weathers but also consideration is required relating to the possible weight it may have to carry.

Next. YES practically any plant can be grown in suitable sized pots or containers, however consideration must be given relating to the vigor of the plant and it's demands feeding and maintenance.

Personal choice. Much dependant upon the size/area of the arbor. Do you want perhaps several climbers/ramblers or just a few. Included here I would say, you have to ask yourself, 'Do I want greenery and perhaps flowers all year-round' For instance Jasmine is very accomadating. There is the winter one, then the white very vigorous one, but the best scented, then the pink one that has very small pink trumpet shaped flowers. Clematis and lonicera and of course roses. The list is never ending. I have actually seen runner beans being grown on an arbor.

Tetters mentions raised beds. Perhaps this is a good idea, as it allows more root growth area. Please come back with anymore questions. We enjoy helping out.

Thanks, you've all given me some great ideas and encouragement. I'll keep you updated as we make a start on the project, and no doubt will be needing some tips with pond planting too :)
