Are these Carex still alive?

    They look like quite young plants. Have you had them long? If it's Carex buchananii, they are quite slow growing and you will not see growth early in the season. Do not be tempted to cut back anything as they can die if you cut too hard-back.

      Thanks for your advice. I don't know the variety. They were donated last year (I receive donated plants and sell on for local charities). Do you know if any new growth starts off green, then turn brown? I'll keep an eye on them

      Take them out of the pots and have a look for some white roots.
      If you see white roots, then they're still alive.
      If not, then wait and see what happens

      It was quite a long time ago when I had them, but I think they start as dark purple with slight green tinge. Because it was quite a big clump, most of the leaves covered new growth, so I was not concentrating on new growth tips. Unfortunately I killed mine by not watering enough because I had them in pots. Keep them well watered and wait a bit more as it's still too early to know.
