Does no one use worm towers? I thought they sounded a great idea.

When I took on my allotment there was a wormery device, but going by comments I've heard in the past they are expensive to run (having to buy worms) so I gave it away.

Your link looks a simple to manage but I reckon it might attract vermin. Try it and see, we all could learn something :)

Will take a look in my neighbours skip - already liberated two pallets, and see of there is anything I could use. May just start with one. Neighbour having a huge extension built - there are wooden doors, upvc glass doors. Shame I am not more 'handy'. Sure a could fashion some kind of cold frame.

Our opened bottom kitchen waste bin turns into one on its own, the worms breed in it by themselves, never added any.

When we tip it out though, they hide up inder stones and polythene and look sad

I have a worm city and agree there is a cost to setting up, however it has produced 100 + litres of vermicompost from this time last year until March when I potted into final pots. I have used that in my tomato pots (20% added to potting compost at all stages of potting up)) and have had a great year for tomatoes and am still giving them away by the carrier bag full, Just had bacon and grilled beef masters with crusty bread for lunch. My crop is way up on last year and still going strong. My opinion anything which produces vermicompost is worth a go

We are 'worm central' here. Every time I move pots there they are - wriggle wriggle.

Looks like I will have to source worm tower materials from elsewhere. The skip was removed whilst I was out running errands. Glad I asked about the pallets first thing.

I think I need to read up more on it. I thought it was a semi permanent structure - didn't realise I would have to 'empty' it. As for worms - I have stacks already in the garden - big, long, fat, wriggly worms.
