Me and LoL were discussing this one a while back, its a really exotic looking grass that grows like crazy to 15ft perhaps.
In the end I was put off by a pic LoL put up of the river banks in Portugal, it spreads very quickly apparently.

Having a stream in the garden i thought it would look really nice on the opposite bank so it can go as crazy as it likes.

    Hi daz

These are the photos pete is talking about ...

In the first picture, it's that row across the middle with plumes on top. The trees immediately nearest me are olive and the ones nearest the bamboo are orange.

daz, it may be too big / invasive for your little stream. [IMG] However, if I come across a small rooting, I'll let you know.

pete, after you determined what it was, I don't think I told you that I found it in my book ... it's called the Giant Reed and grows upwards of 20ft/6m height and spread. They do not need waterlogged soil, ie, riverbanks, but tolerate it.

Hello :D , Arundo Donax is one of the most invasive plants in warmer climates. Just do a search and see the problems they have in California. That said I have been growing it in this country for 5 years with no invasion. The frost cuts down the stems well before flowering and I keep them moist. Not sure of the potential problems of growing it near free flowing water as the off shoots root very easily. However, they take a while to produce a proper clump as we simply don't have the heat. In a sturdy sucken pot I recon you would be ok, but I am also not sure if the growth rate would be enough to stop them rotting in the constantly wet. They also grow a little stunted in pots.

A 3 litre pot of Arundo is usually only about £7 and unless you have a green house is a better bet than waiting for a shoot to clump up.

    Shoots really easily...

Apologies for the 1+ year old photos, I haven't photo'd it recently. It tends to be a filler with the miscanthus and planted with the miscanthus makes a nice tall change of leaf texture. [IMG]
