As many of you know, for the last 5 years I have been a self-employed taxi driver . About a month ago, during the really hot weather, my alternator burnt out, cooking the engine at the same time. The engine had been running rough for a while anyway so it was only a matter of time before it gave up the ghost. Fortunately for me I was in my drive when it happened and not out on the road somewhere. As the repair would not have been cost effective, the car was sold for scrap. This left me without a car and an income. In a funny way, the timing couldn't have been better. My annual licences would have been due for renewal at the end of this month. By breaking down when I did I saved myself an unnecessary expense.

Today I started a new job. It's only part time hours for now but there is always a chance the job will "evolve" in time. A change of job means a change in routine. For the last 5 years I have been able to potter pretty much as and when I felt the inclination. From now on my opportunities will be limited to mornings and weekends. That will take a lot of getting used to as I'm not by all accounts a morning person.

With the advent of darker evenings and cooler temperatures, the mornings will be the ideal time to get jobs done. As long as I pace myself I'm sure it's something I could get used to.

    Happy Days.

Exactly the right way to look at it Gary  There is no progress without change, and I have a feeling things will be looking up for you now. Being self employed can certainly have it`s down times as I for one know, having been self employed for about 93 years :phew::thud:

I changed career just over two years ago for a better work life balance and am so glad that I did.

Good luck with the new job. Sometimes it takes a chain of events to push us in a different direction.

Best of luck with the new job Gary :)

It is amazing how fate seems to know when to force us to make changes, even if it means we go through the mill a bit to get there.

Well it's been a busy couple of days. It's looking like my new job might evolve sooner rather than later. I've already worked a 12 hour day today and will do the same tomorrow. For the next 2 weeks I shall be covering holidays which means more full days. I have been promised a permanent deal of between 30 and 40 hours per week. This will be due to an amalgamation of new duties and existing ones. You could almost say that the new job has been created with me in mind.
