Did anyone see the item on the BBC news of a 8' long Bottle Nose Dolphin in trouble by having a large fishing hook and net caught in it's fins???. It saw a group of Scuba Divers and swam around them until they realised what was wrong. One of the divers cut the net with a knife and then managed to get the hook out of the Dolphin's fin. In all this time the Dolphin kept close to the Divers and allowed the cutting and pulling out of the hook without any problem. I gives me a nice feeling that a Dolphin would know where to go and who to ask for help....and get it.:hapydancsmil:

I feel that almost certainly in the future we can intelligently communicate with dolphins (it will involve computers for our part), they are so like us, social and inquisitive, and I feel to communicate with them, we would see major similarities with the way we communicate, think and play. Obviously they are a sea mammal and adapted so, but if they were a land mammal, you have to wonder how far they would have gone with their intelligence.

We have already managed to communicate on a limited basis with Chimpanzees, but I feel Dolphins are perhaps a little more intelligent than Chimpanzees?

I hope in my lifetime I will be able to 'speak' with a dolphin!

I don't doubt that one day we will be able to communicate on a limited basis with Dolphins, Whales, Porpoises and Apes, but I'm not sure that will be advantageous to them as I have a rather cynical view of the Human Race. We're the only species, that go to War and kill for "intellectual" reasons. Even Ants who will wage War on other Ants do it for survival reasons, we do it for beliefs.
I hadn't been really thinking about the matter until Stephen posted and "bumped" this Thread into life again, but it suddenly dawned on me [I know, I'm "slow" ] that not only are Dolphins intelligent enough to communicate with each other but they're also able to recognise another "intelligent" species that would be able to give them help. How did it process the mental decision correctly to approach a group of Divers and distinguish between a being that was capable of giving help and, say, a large fish that couldn't?

I would dread to hear what it would say , pollution, caught in nets , Japanese killing them , captured from the wild and used to amuse us all .

And the apes taught to sign language , I watched that programme only to watch another (catch up) years later with the same guy that went to visit one of them stuck in a lab cage infected with the aids virus its one of those memories that I wish I didn't have the guy was so traumatised by it all he said he would never visit her again and she recognised him and could still sign, so sad.

If they made a complaint then we'd have to listen, especially if they want the same rights as us and the full weight of the law to back them up.

They've probably got rights than we have, Ziggy:snork: We Humans deny certain races and countries of rights because of our political or religious beliefs. Would a Dolphin be able to recognise the restrictive thing we call Law, especially as we have seen time and again that the Law and Justice doesn't always walk hand in hand. If you were to take the theory to it's limits it would be long before the Human Race would be interfering with and trying to rule the Mammals we could communicate...........God forbid.:coffee:

I meant we'd have to comply with their laws.

It will say something like 'Stupid monkey, your ancestors put you there, limited in almost every way. You can't fly, you can't run very fast, you're swimming ability is a joke, you're eyesight is dire, you can't even see at all unless its light, you're hearing is dire, limited to a ridiculously narrow band from about 40Hz to a laughably low 18kHz, and you can't even catch your own food any more. Your ancient ancestors should never have left the oceans. Not like us, able to move at speed with incredible agility in 3 dimensions rather than your 2, able to switch to sonar when there's not enough light for our eyes to work well, able to communicate over hundreds of miles without your technology that you hold so dear, able to catch our own food, and able to do all of this without plundering the very earth we call home'.
