I have had this plant for at least 10 years.
I have a feeling that it is an astilbe, but I have never seen one anywhere near as big as this. I thought they remained small.
I cut it right down every autumn, and every year it grows back bigger than previously.
It is looking beautiful at the moment.

I'm afraid I can't see your picture, redstar.
              Thank you very much, Verdun.
I was sure it is too big to be an astilbe.
Now I shall be able to correct others when they see it.

Whippet, take advantage of its size and grow low growing plants like corydalis flexuosa around it. Beautiful sky blue flowers from early spring to early summer :). Or japanese painted ferns there:)

That sounds as though it would look lovely, Verdun.
But my garden is having to stay 'as is' now.
Old age, and four dogs, have galloped up - and overtaken me, now.

don't post pics often, as for this site it does not take directly from the camera. so I have to upload it, and download it to my downloads, or send it to photobucket. or if I upload it to facebook, then I can download it to downloads then move to here, or move to photobucket, then move to here. Normally I just do walk about videos, and upload them to you tub then put the link in my garden thread, so then there are more shots of plants then there. and that is it. tired from explaining all that now. so view my thread. thanks.

I have a couple of white astilbes too and much prefer their neatness and compactness to that of aruncus. Agree that the latter can get pretty big :)

The only down side to it, is that the flowers don't last long enough. It seems as they are no sooner in bloom, than they turn a mucky brown.

I had astilbes years ago, and really like them. There are some nice colours, too.
