I'm probably worrying over nothing and they'll all be back again in a couple months, but I'm slightly paranoid that the greenfinches, tits, starlings and sparrows are all ignoring me...

I'm sitting here, watching ten collared-doves demolishing the food I've put out. I'd normally 'shoo' them away but to be honest there's nothing else about so it would be wasteful for me to leave the food to go manky; and anyway, they'll only come down again when I go to work.

Are the 'nice' birds currently deserting everyone? Or is it just me? Would it be mean to not put any more table food out and just leave the feeders so the dirty pigeons (sorry, I mean beautiful doves) have no food to choose from in my garden?

Hi Iain and welcome to G.C. :thumb:

Just keep a small variety of foods out to attract different species, the breeding season for our feathered friends has all but ended so feeding isn't so frenzied at this time of year, as long as the birds know where there is food they will return :)

Don't worry Iain! It usually goes quiet at this time of year as a lot of the small birds are moulting ready for the winter, so they lie low as their flying and drying out skills aren't up to scratch! Or maybe they're embarrassed...! They'll be back!

When I first moved to the countryside, I put up a bird feeder with the nuts in and the feeder was festooned with Tits, great and blue, greenfinch, siskin, chafinch and the odd sparrow.
That was some years ago, and then they all deserted us, and for many a month and years I have not seen them since. I have given up putting food in the feeder and it hangs empty as just a bit of an ornament in the garden now.
    Really miss seeing them.

That is such a sad story... the image of a feeder gently swaying, empty except for a whispy cobweb or maybe a dried leaf caught temporarily...
