I just picked up three auricula plants, in beatuful bloom for 75p each from a house down the road, they are on a table at theside of the lane.

I had intended to put them in the flower bed, like my primulas, but I looked them up and they look a little bit more temperamental than the average plant!

Would I be better keeping them in a pot? Or do they do ok in the border? Does anyone know?

The chap with one of the National collections grows them in rows on his allotment, in between vegetable plants. They are tougher than they look. The fancy show ones are grown in pots for showing not because they need to be treated that way. Main problem with them in pots is vine weevil so you need to keep an eye on that and also root aphids can attack them.

Well, in that case I think I will shove them in the border and let them take their chances. For 75p each, just a bot of colour this spring is pretty good value!

    Thanks Palustris
