Just been looking on JerseyPlants (I know some of you hate that site) and they're selling plants for autumn, just wondering which are the best for that season?

    I like the look of

    'Viola Valentino'

But apart from that, I am clueless as to what I should get..

    Thanks in advance!

The violas look good and I have seen some really nice displays.

Never had any trouble with JerseyPlants but I know several GC members have.

Hi Kyle, Violas are so pretty & very tough little plants.. My neighbour uses this site allot to get bedding plants from & he always has a beautiful show..

I had Brookside plants in my favourites! I was leaning towards JerseyPlants because of the free p&p and the geraniums I bought from them a few weeks ago came in great condition!

Thanks for your advice Jordie & Marley, I think I'll go with the Violas :)

Violas make a great show Kyle. The ones I planted last autumn were great. They got covered with a foot of snow for weeks in the winter and when the snow went they bounced back as good as new. They still look great.

If I buy the 160 plug plants from JerseyPlants, what would be the best strategy when planting them? In bunches? on their own?

Definitely in bunches Kyle - and they do great in pots.

Thanks! I'm going to order them soon to make sure they don't run out!

I bought some violas from JPD a couple of years ago – wanting to create a nice splash of colour for a Christmas party. They arrived in late September a month after they were promised - whilst they were in good condition they were too small to plant out straight away – so I put them in a nursery bed trying to get them bigger before planting out. They didn’t grow big enough to flower over the winter so my ‘brighten up the garden plan’ never worked, but come the early spring they made a lovely display and kept going for months. JPD are reasonable value but their delivery time is not good, so this year I’m growing my own winter bedding from seed.

Violas are dead easy to grow from seed, delivery won't be till late autumn so you could just chuck a couple of packets of seed in a tray and save yourself a fiver and maybe a lot of grief :heehee:

Good ideas, I may grow some from seed, then.. don't think I even have room for 160!
